Comics in Schools - The Doom That Came To Gourock

Paul Bristow • April 23, 2020

Gourock Primary Attacked by a Witch!

Throughout March, we worked with Gourock Primary school P4/5 to help them create a crazy comic adventure based on the local legend of the Granny Kempock stone. We have featured witches and Granny Kempock in a few of our previous projects, but this new version was something rather special.

The adventure was ideally suited to the awesome cartoon style of Gourock based artist Mhairi Robertson - who also delivered a workshop to the class on creating comic sound effects which can merge language and artwork to help tell stories. Bam!

We worked with the class to create our Granny Kempock story, and then, the class created their own comic strips featuring dinosaur spacemen, ninja wizards, spooky dolls...all sorts of amazing characters.

Inverclyde Storytelling
By Magic Torch Comics October 18, 2021
Earlier this month, we were asked to produce some artwork for the Afrowegian Project , imagining an Afro-Futurist version of the story of real world cycling superhero, Marshall 'Major' Taylor. The comic display panels form part of an exhibition by the riverside in Glasgow throughout October. You can read more about the work of the project and how to get involved. We're looking forward to doing some more collaborative work with Afrowegian's Jim Muotone, down in Inverclyde over the next few months.

Earlier this year, our director Paul Bristow spoke to Tall Tale films as part of CVS Inverclyde's Digital Open Studios project. Check out the short video below to hear Paul chat about storytelling, communities and his creative process for his own writing and his work with Magic Torch Comics CIC. You can also see his fairly messy home office under the stairs...
